Ethanol
“It could .. take years before drivers get relief from high gas prices”,
US Energy Secretary Sam Bodman
Could the US learn from Brazil
Ethanol CAN replace gasoline with significant energy savings
Four quick Ethanol Fuel facts:
- Ethanol is widely available in Brazil. However in the United States the only major uptake has been in the Mid West where it is distilled as Corn Ethanol
- Of the 1.7 million vehicles manufactured in Brazil last year almost half were flex-fuel cars (Ethanol Cars) for the domestic market. See Ethanol Distillation for how the manufacturing process works.
- The United States and Brazil each produced about 5 billion gallons of Corn Ethanol in 2005. China is distant third in ethanol production having produced 1 million gallons in 2004.
- European nations are converting more to bio-diesel than ethanol since they traditionally have more diesel fuel vehicles than gasoline based vehicles
